Past Chairs & Presidents

The Newmarket Chamber has been around for nearly 160 years, so it’s really no surprise that our list of past Chairs and Presidents is long and distinguished.

The Founding President

Donald Sutherland (the miller not the actor) holds the distinction of being the founding president of the Newmarket Board of Trade back in 1857. Born in Scotland, Sutherland landed first in Schomberg before settling in Newmarket in 1853. His area businesses included a four-storey mill and later the Clark General Store on Main Street. Always an active member of the community, Sutherland’s many contributions included serving as a Justice of the Peace, a school trustee and a multi-termed councillor.
