Coming this Fall! Career Pathways Expo
07 Sep 2018
The inability to find qualified staff is a common challenge for businesses. We hear it all the time as does the Town of Newmarket’s Economic Development office. For some businesses, the issue is so significant that it impacts the growth of their businesses.
On the flipside, we’ve learned through a number of local youth focus groups, that students are unaware of the companies, industries and careers that exist in the region. They simply don’t know what’s out there and there’s an inconsistency in the type of information they receive when it comes to career options.
Enter the Career Pathways Expo, a cooperative effort in northern York Region between the public and private sector and non-profit organizations.
Aimed at secondary students (and their influencers), the Career Pathways Expo is designed to provide insight into the opportunities that exist in the Region and advice on how to capitalize on them. We’re packing it with a lot of great info, including overviews on a broad variety of job paths and the skills, education and expectations needed for various careers and sectors. What skills are in demand? What opportunities are on the rise? We’ll be talking about it and sharing info!
The Expo will feature a variety of local businesses, post-secondary institutions, and information on training in trades, entrepreneurship and other local supports and opportunities. It will also feature speakers and information sessions. There will be interactive tools to help students, teachers and parents explore career pathways and access local labour market information.
The inaugural Career Pathways Expo launches October 30th and will be open to participating secondary students and educators during the day. In the evening, parents and job-seekers are invited to attend to help broaden their understanding of careers and discover available opportunities in the region at the Expo’s job fair.
