The Newmarket Chamber of Commerce works with partner organizations to develop strategic initiatives focused on building a prosperous community in Newmarket. By working collaboratively and building new working relationships, a broad cross-section of interests in the community are represented.
Shared Digital Infrastructure (SDI) - Intelligent Newmarket Prosperity RoundTable Smart Commute Central York
Shared Digital Infrastructure/Intelligent Newmarket: Along with the Newmarket Public Library, Southlake Regional Health Centre, the Town of Newmarket and Newmarket Tay Power Distribution Ltd., the Chamber of Commerce is a founding organization of the Shared Digital Infrastructure (SDI) project. Designed to build common infrastructure, programs and services, the SDI collaborative is aimed at transitioning our community to a knowledge-based economy. With funding from the federal Economic Action Plan, numerous initiatives were completed, including a video conferencing network, putting 125 years of Newmarket history and culture online and implementing a distributed shared community messaging system.
Prosperity Round Table: It has been said that there can be no sustainable prosperity in a community, unless there is prosperity for all. Based on similiar successful initiatives in Ontario, a Prosperity Round Table has been established in Newmarket. The first session, facilitated by the Canadian Urban Institute, brought together representatives from business, education, social services, arts, government, health, sports and environmental groups, to discuss key challenges and opportunities for the future development of Newmarket. The diversity of input has led to greater insight and establishing common ground. The preliminary report is due before the end of June, and will be made publicly available through the Chamber web site.
Health Care Commission: Southlake Regional Health Centre is the largest employer in Newmarket, and is central to the future development plans of Newmarket. With a visionary plan to continue to build world-class facilities and programs servicing York Region and beyond, Southlake will generate new employement opportunities, spur innovation and act as a magnet for skilled professionals and investment. The Health Care Commission was established to bring together community leaders to develop strategies and plans to support the future development of a vibrant Health Care focus in our local economy.
Smart Commute Central York (SCCY): A strategic program of the Newmarket Chamber of Commerce, Smart Commute works with local businesses to reduce the number of single car commuters through innovative programs, education, online ride matching services and championing biking and walking as viable alternative modes of transportation.
