The Newmarket Prosperity Roundtable

Civic leadership and community collaboration have combined to form a dynamic and engaged group focused on identifying issues and actions that will ensure Newmarket's future prosperity.

The first Prosperity Roundtable Event was held in May of 2010.  The results of the meeting were summarized by the  Canadian Urban Institute (CUI), summarized by the Steering Committee, and distributed to all participants. Comments and feedback on the report from interested parties and residents, are welcome. The most recent Prosperity Roundtable was held in June 2011, hosted by XE.Com, with more than 40 different organizations participating.  Presentations were made by Innovation York, the Shared Digital Infrastructure Project, the Town of Newmarket's Economic Development Office, the Business Knowledge Initiative, Women's Centre of York Region and Southlake Regional Health Centre, to share what programs and intiatives are being developed in our community. Participants then discussed the following topics, which were highlighted as strategic priorities for our future prosperity:

  1. Youth engagement - options for accommodating employment, education and entertainment
  2. Marketing our community - celebrating our successes, both within the community and to the outside world
  3. Fostering Innovation and Entrepreneurship - how we can work together to support and encourage innovation in our businesses, not-for-profits and public sectors, and to create a rich environment to grow start up companies
  4. How we can effectively develop and leverage community meeeting spaces
  5. How to more broadly engage residents and businesses in community collaboratives and other civic-led initiatives and, How to engage seniors, What metrics are available to benchmark our progress, and Accelerating the Transition to an Intelligent Community and Leveraging Opportunities of the Broadband Economy.

Key ideas are summarized and posted below.

The first initiative arising from the Prosperity Round Table is the creation of a local chapter of the Awesome Foundation.
